Pilipinas Debate 2016 ... the subject that should matter to all Filipinos
I am a fan of Filipino telenovela. It is a way for an oversee worker like me to feel home. But I love listening and discussing politics too, not that I want to be a politician. I studied in the University where Philippine politics was greatly discussed and taught and where most Philippine presidents came from. But more than that, politics affect all our lives.
I am glad that different media companies in the Philippines organized presidential debates to be done in different regions of the country. The first one happened in Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao, the big island in the Philippines with least share of our national budget, the last that usually experiences progress. But it is the island which contributes the largest share of our export products.
Some interesting points from the debates:
1. Miriam Defensor Santiago was always witty in her answer. She was fiercing but funny. She was asked about her long absence in the Senate when she was sick and if she couldn't anymore do her responsibilities as Senator how much more when she becomes President .. and she answered....
"May stage 4 cancer ako nuon, ano dapat kong gawin... hinihintay ko na lang mamatay, kaso hindi ako pinatay ng guardian angel ko. There is no law in the Constitution that prohibits sick Filipino to run for President"
2. Grace Poe was so calm and poised in answering questions. In fact, she said her answers in straight Filipino. She was so nice to listen. However, when asked about her thin resume when it comes to public service. I did't like her answer and I think she should have answered this way ....
But I like Poe's answer about Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). Poe said that definitely this needed attention but first she must bring development to the region with 30% of budget goes to Mindanao. She said
"Kasama sa usapan ng kapayapaan ang pag-unlad"
3. Mar Roxas was also calm although he made comments that definitely irritated Binay. But he is very knowledgeable about the status of our country and the statistics of the different sectors of our nation. As Poe, he also has untainted reputation. One of the comments that I liked was his reaction to Jomar Binay when asked about drugs and corruption Binay said that Makati has the lowest rate of drug abuse and poverty. Roxas said...
"Dalawa ang Makati. Makati ng mga Ayala na maunlad at maraming trabaho at Makati ng mga Binay na laganap ang kahirapan at droga. "
4. Rody Duterte was as fierce as Defensor and can be as witty as her. In fact he said...
“I am glad that Sen. Miriam Santago is here, she one of the two who are qualified [to lead the country],” -
He also didn't argue much, in fact he liked some strategy suggested by other Presidential candidates. He kept mentioning about his emphasis for crime-free and corruption-free country within months of his presidency if he will be elected.
5. Jojomar Binay is always at the top of most polls for presidential election but bombarded with issue of corruption. He evaded the issue of corruption by saying
“Kahirapan pa rin problema ng bayan.”
It is true but quite ironic, he is bombarded with case of corruption.
Who should I vote? I don't know yet. But at least, the list of candidates is promising and I was happy to know that they came prepared knowing what they are saying. Also, they didn't do a messy rebuttal in the Debate.
